Q-Space was founded in Beijing in April 2016. It is a queer and feminist maker space located in a hutong, providing a learning space and community actions for change.

Vision, Mission, and Values

Q-Space is a grassroots community-maker space, which believes that embracing diversity is the key to solving social issues. Our vision is one where all people have access to the tools and resources to be able to create the change they would like to see in the world. Our space is open and embracing, focusing on mindful learning through building community by building bridges and sharing knowledge and skills. We focus particularly on the empowerment of women and the LGBTQ+ populations.

All our events are run by volunteers coming together to share skills with one another. We operate by a ‘pay as you feel’ donation policy to ensure that our events can remain accessible to as diverse set of people as possible. We also often provide food cooked by the community and sell things made within the community.

Below is a list and description of our regular events.

Graphic Design

In the graphic design workshops participants learn skills on different visual softwares like photoshop, illustrator, indesign etc. and improve their knowledge on making better visual design, no matter if they are beginners or already advanced graphic designers!

Language Corner

The language corner was born to have people learn and deeply understand the culture of one country. It can take two forms: dinners focused on the food of a country and culture corner during which we teach basic words and have people know about the culture of a country through activities.

Maker Club

We use technical tools such as a 3D printer or more manual knowledge such as silkscreen printing to collaboratively make and create what we have in mind. We think, we make, and it is as simple as that.

Nonviolent Communication

The intention of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is to create a quality connection with ourselves and with others, through a sincere, authentic and respectful dialogue, allowing us to overcome conflicts and work together to meet the needs of all concerned.

Q-Screen Salon

Every Sunday night we gather to watch a selection of LGBTQ+ films and engage into a discussion afterwards. It is a great platform and opportunity for people to talk about queer, feminism and other related topics.

Research & Cake

At our regular Research & Cake sessions we gather to learn and share knowledge about research methods – sometimes whilst eating cake. We discuss how to design, carry out and interpret research studies that can change the world through critical research that embraces community involvement and inclusion.
